• Match jobs to the actual week. If one partner works long shifts Monday to Wednesday, load their chores onto Thursday to Sunday rather than pretending every day is the same.

• Protect one evening each. Build in a night off apiece so the rota never turns relentless.

Step four: bring the children in, age-appropriately

Sharing the load isn’t only a two-adult job. School-age children can take on real, effort-scaled tasks, and it genuinely lightens the week:

• Ages 3–5: put toys away, carry their plate to the sink.
• Ages 6–10: feed the pet, lay the table, sort their own book bag.
• Ages 11+: load the dishwasher, hang out washing, make a simple breakfast.
