A fair chore chart for couples that actually sticks

A chore chart sticks when it splits the real workload, not just the visible one. Capture every job (including the invisible mental-load ones, like remembering the dentist), weight each by effort instead of counting them, rotate the jobs nobody wants, keep the chart somewhere you both actually look, and agree a fixed weekly reset. Paper charts fail because they freeze on a bad week and quietly punish whoever notices things first.

Start by capturing the invisible work

Most charts list only the jobs you can see: bins out, dishwasher, hoovering. The load that breeds resentment is the stuff that never makes the list — noticing you’re low on nappies, booking the MOT, replying to the WhatsApp about the school trip, tracking who’s due new shoes.

Do a brain-dump together one evening, no editing:

• Physical jobs: cooking, laundry, the school run, bath and bedtime, tidying.
• Admin jobs: appointments, forms, birthday presents, renewals, packed lunches planned ahead.
• “Noticing” jobs: spotting the milk’s nearly gone, remembering it’s non-uniform day, tracking who’s due a haircut.

If it isn’t written down, it defaults to whoever cares most — and that person burns out quietly. Naming the invisible jobs is often the single biggest shift a couple can make.

A blank page is harder than an edit, so if the brain-dump stalls, work from a ready-made chores list with timings and effort ratings and cut it down to your house.

Weight by effort, not by count

“We do five jobs each” sounds fair and rarely is. Emptying the dishwasher (two minutes) is not the weekday bedtime routine (forty-five minutes plus negotiation). A flat count rewards whoever grabs the quick wins.

Score each task 1–5 for effort:

• 1 — bins out, feed the cat, put a wash on.
• 3 — cook a proper dinner, do the full school run, bath-and-bed.
• 5 — deep-clean the kitchen, a weekly food shop with two kids in tow, clear the family admin backlog.

Then balance the totals, not the tallies. One partner might own three high-effort jobs while the other owns seven small ones and still land even. Rotate the grim jobs on a schedule

• Rotate on a named day so it’s automatic, not a debate: bins are whoever’s turn on Sunday night.
• Leave genuinely-suited jobs where they belong. If one of you enjoys cooking, don’t rotate that for the sake of it — rotate the dreaded jobs, not the ones that already work.

The goal isn’t perfect symmetry every week. It’s making sure no single person is permanently stuck with the grimmest 10%.

Make it visible where you already look

A chart you have to remember to check is a chart you’ll stop checking by Wednesday. Put it in the path of daily life:

• Fridge or kitchen wall for a paper or magnetic version — it works because everyone walks past it.
• A shared phone view if your household lives on its phones, so it updates when plans change and the school run swaps at 8am.
• Login-free for younger children — under-8s can tick their own jobs off if the chart doesn’t need a password.

Whatever the format, one rule matters most: it has to update when life does. A chart that assumes a perfect week is wrong by Tuesday. Agree a weekly reset (and keep it short)

• What’s coming up this week? Late meetings, a nursery closure, an away game.
• Did anything land unfairly last week? Adjust, don’t relitigate.
• Who’s genuinely stretched — a work deadline, a rough night’s sleep — and what shifts across?

Fairness over a term-time month matters far more than fairness on any single Tuesday. If one partner is flat out at work in March, the chart should flex, then flex back. The reset is where that happens without anyone having to ask.
