Method

  1. 1

Heat the oven to 180C (160C fan, gas 4). Peel and very thinly slice the potatoes.

  2. 2

Butter a round ovenproof dish and layer the potato slices and sliced onions, overlapping, brushing each layer with melted butter and scattering with dried thyme.

  3. 3

Cover with foil and bake for 50 minutes, then uncover and bake for a further 15 minutes until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.

  4. 4

Meanwhile, grill or fry the gammon steaks for 4-5 minutes on each side until cooked through with no pink remaining.

  5. 5

Turn the onion cake out and cut into wedges.

  6. 6

Serve the onion cake with the gammon steaks alongside.
